Do You Think We Sabotage Ourselves By Procrastinating?
Hello All,
I thought I would write about something different today instead of doing my usual daily tasks.
Basically over the last week I have been working mainly on my blog and prettying it up, editing some of the posts, creating my resources page, adding in links to my websites and products and services that I highly recommend.
At the moment I am up to watching Day 17 in 30DC even though they are up to Day 25, and I still have to watch Week 29 & 30 of my Masterclass training with John Thornhill.
In today’s post I want to talk about what I have been learning from Karl Moore’s videos from 30DC. This is the first time 30DC has included videos like this and I highly commend them for doing it as they have been really helpful.
The first video training from Karl was about Procrastination and how and why we procrastinate.
What is Procrastination?
Procrastination or procrastinating is a form of self sabotage. Sometimes we procrastinate because there is a chore/task or something we really don’t want to do. For example I personally procrastinate when it comes to doing the dishes and doing the ironing!
Yes I know these tasks may sound trivial to you but believe me they are not tasks I enjoy doing and I will do anything to get out of doing them.
However in normal circumstances procrastination often occurs to people when you have a feeling of being stuck or a feeling that you can’t move forward, but most of all procrastination mainly occurs because of our fears!
Everyone has personal fears, sometimes we don’t even realise we have these fears. Some of us have fears of failure, fears of success, fears of what other people think. I can so relate to this it isn’t funny. Having come from a difficult background my early adult years were ones of ridicule for my choices and judgment from friends and family and general main stream society.
I am not going to get too in depth of my life story but basically I did not do the whole get married, get a normal job and settle down routine. I spent my early adult years having a lot of fun, partying, going out, spending money, and working in the nightclub industry.
I knew deep down that I was more than just a bar tender and entertainer, but every time I tried to start a business and get into “A Normal job” I found I was judged for who I was and where I came from. I became very fearful that I didn’t deserve success. I became very fearful of what other people thought.
I didn’t realise a lot of this at the time I often just had the “Woh is me attitude!”.
It wasn’t until I went to an Anthony Robbins seminar “Unleash The Power Within” that I actually started to understand that I was sabotaging myself by my procrastination and my fears. I was hurting me!
It was many years later that I finally overcame my procrastination and sabotage fears.
Karl’s video in 30dc talked about simple steps to help break through your fears that cause you to procrastinate. One of the things he suggests is to ask yourself:
“Why do you think you are fearful?”
“What do you think you are fearful of?”
Once you are able to answer your own questions you need to realise that having these thoughts are limiting you.
He even says to “Stop feeling sorry for yourself”.
I actually thought that comment was a bit confronting when I heard it, but very true.
We can often feel overwhelmed when we have a lot going on, and we can often think things are bigger than they are. I can so relate to this comment and when this occurs to me, I often just try and break my tasks down to little tasks instead of one big task and that way the feeling of overwhelm often dissipates away.
Little goals and steps or tasks are a lot easier to accomplish and achieve than one big gigantic task. As you achieve these little goals you will often have a feeling of success and personal achievement which will encourage you to slowly achieve more.
One of the things I have learned is that it is the momentum of the little goals that help achieve the bigger goals, like I have said in an earlier post “One step at a time.”
Another sign of self sabotage and procrastination according to Karl Moore is when you focus on the things which aren’t really important, you focus on the tedious details that are often irrelevant at the time.
Boy can I relate to that comment!!
Over 10 years ago I attempted to set up an entertainment troupe of dancers. I spent 6 months and nearly $50,000 setting up the business. I got the music ready, the costumes, the photo shoots, the advertising, the girls etc etc etc and just when I was ready to launch, the state I was setting up my troupe in changed all the liquor licensing laws and I had to completely revamp the business and spend more money or let it go.
I had run out of money and was in major debt so I had to let it go.
Big Big learning lesson, but the bottom line is, if I hadn’t focused on the silly little details, because deep down I actually had a fear of failure I would have saved myself an awful lot of time and money.
:
Your fears can cost you big time! I procrastinated on the important task at hand and thus lost a lot of money and time.
Only focus on what is absolutely important. When you are doing something ask yourself;
“Is this important for achieving my goals?”
If it isn’t truly important, don’t do it. Only do what is important and that will help you avoid procrastination and self sabotage.
What ever goals you want to achieve in life, whether they are big or small it doesn’t matter, only YOU can make them happen. And the only way you can make them happen is if YOU find the time to do the little steps or tasks that need to be done to achieve the goals you desire.
A great way to help with procrastination is to write out tasks.
- First write your goals out.
- Then for each goal write out a task list of what you need to do to achieve the goal.
- Then break the task list down to monthly, weekly and daily tasks.
- As you achieve each small task tick them off and do a little happy dance.
Trust me this stuff works!!
Remember the next time you find yourself procrastinating that you are only hurting yourself.
Get rid of your fears, stop procrastinating and just do it! And give yourself a chocolate bar as a reward!!
That always works for me!!!
I hope you have found my words helpful if you are one to procrastinate. The motto that works for me is:
“One little task at a time!”
So until next time……….

Procastinating is not a good sign of being a human. It is just that we don’t prioritize what is the activity that needs to be done.

Hi Brenna,
I believe procrastinating is when we are avoiding doing a task we really don’t want to do. Instead we find other things to do. at some point in everyone’s life every single person will procrastinate at some stage. It is only human nature!
