I Think I Have Been hacked!

Hello All,

I just thought I would write this very quick post to keep you up to date. I may not post for a week or so. I have a feeling I have been hacked and I have no idea if it is my website that has been hacked or my computer! :(

Over the last couple of weeks every now and again I have been noticing the pop ups appearing on my site when ever I have loaded it up in internet explorer or firefox. These lovely popups have been trying to sell me “texas holdem poker”.

Now I know I am not a gambler and as far as I know I have note placed any popups to this site! I did contact my hosting company and appareantly according to them there is no malicious code as far as they can see to my site, and believe my computer has a virus.

After numerous scans over the last 4 days according to my computer I don’t have any viruses yet I am still getting the pop ups! So I guess my next choice is to reformat my computer and start again. That way I know my computer is clean. I will also have to strip back my website to its bare shell and start again.

In my reading travels over the last week apparently the lovely hackers can enter our sites through the plugins we have installed! :(

WordPress is a great content management system, however because it is freeware and open source it can also leave us sitting ducks for hackers! :oops:

So must away to try and sort out this little pickle I am in. Luckily this time I have done my back ups of everything and will only loose time.

I will keep you all up to date of what has occurred.

If any of you have ever noticed a pop up attached to my site. I would really appreciate a comment to let me know which browser and what pop up or maybe it is just my computer riddled with an infection I can’t seem to remove! :evil:

I am confused! :(

  1. Hi Jacinta,

    No, I have never gotten a popup when visiting your site. I just turned off my pop-up blocker and there is nothing. Are they pop up windows or some sort of pop-over ad? And do the appear only on certain pages in your blog? And is it only on your blog – no other sites?

    Sorry to read about your problems with pop ups. I once had ‘Texas hold em poker’ on my PC. That PC has been up in my loft for some years now with the Texas poker pop up still inside, waiting to ‘pop’ on to my screen again!

    I haven’t ever noticed any pop-ups on your blog.

    So it sounds like your browsers could have been hacked? Maybe a self-installing plugin or something??

    I have been to your site numerous times and I have never gotten a pop-up. I used Firefox. I hope you get to the bottom of it…
    I guess that really is the biggest drawback to WorkPress…opensource.
    Nothings perfect I guess…;)
    Please keep us updated as to what you find out. I am definitely interested!

  5. Oh, Jacinta, how terrible! I haven’t noticed any pop ups, but I have them blocked anyway so they may not appear when I go onto your blog. Hope you get sorted quickly before anything happens!

  6. I noticed your blog is buggy in the menu part, the page is all crooked slightly I suppose it happens sometimes when you cant test it in all browsers. Anyhow i thought i would notify you

    I have noticed my blog looks a little centred and odd in Internet explorer. Not sure why it does that but looks good in Firefox. Not sure how to change it either! :(
