It is starting to look a lot like Christmas!!!

Once again I am a few days late with last weeks post. The silly season is upon us and it is crazy time. This last week I have still been madly re-formatting my computer and re-installing all the programs.

With preparing Christmas presents I thought I would trial printing photos on my printer. Well I have learnt another simple cost effective lesson. It is cheaper and less time consuming to pay some one to do it.

Trying to print pictures around a little one, with a printer that is deciding not to work properly has worked out to cost more in ink and paper and time than if I had of gone down to my local printing shop and paid to get them printed. I guess it is the thought that counts.

So that is my ramblings for this week on my lessons learned. So now I will continuing on with my story of my online beginnings….

OK.  In the last post we are talking about my little manual and my little eBay business selling spray tanning systems and spray tan solution in 2006. By the end of 2006 beginning of 2007 a lot of competitors had started selling spray tanning items on eBay, I was no longer one of the few instead I had become one of the many.

Due to the amount of competitors coming on board the price war begun!!! This is the one thing I do not understand about the beauty industry.

For some reason instead of quality of service and making a profit and actually operating a financially viable business, this industry price cuts itself to the point of being over worked and under paid!!!! I have seen so many beauty salons and spray tanners etc work for peanuts, but that is another story!!!

Ebay was no different! Being a supplier of systems and solution I knew the wholesale costs and the minimal profit margin I needed for the whole exercise to be worth my time.

By the end of 2006 I was lucky to be making $30 per sale and by the time I added up all the costs and the time it was definitely not worth it, from a business and accounting perspective it was proving to not be viable. My sales had dropped due to other competitors so I started to look at my options.

At the same time I was heavily pregnant waiting the birth of my first child so carrying those large packages to the post office had started to became a problem. I guess everything happens for a reason. I had contracted Gestational Diabetes and was told to de-stress my life and concentrate on my health and my unborn child. So the last 3 months of my pregnancy I quite my day job and slowly let the eBay business go and concentrated on me and the health of my unborn little one.

During the last few months of waiting for my bubba to be born I spent a lot of time reading and I read a book called “The One Minute Millionaire” by Mark Victor Hansen and Robert Allen. My father had recommended the book to me a few years earlier and it had actually sat on my book shelf for 3 years before I picked it up to read. THIS BOOK CHANGED MY LIFE!!!!!

This book changed my life not because of the story of a mother fighting for her children but the journey she went through to create her business and change her life. I guess because I was literally weeks away from having my baby that the message hit me to the core.

I knew that I needed to create a business around my child and find something I could do from home. It was in this book that I learned about ebooks. At the time I was thinking what is an ebook? (An ebook is a digital version of a physical book that can be downloaded over the internet.)

A light bulb went on and I had a huge Aha moment…..
